Do you ever say that? It’s the infamous, “I know just what you need!” line. Maybe you’ve heard it recently.

Well, I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that the reaction can range from informative to annoying! Really – other people KNOW what you need? Believe it or not, it might be true in some cases.

As we go through our days, we put blinders on. We see what’s in front of us for ourselves, our business and our families. And many times, the other people we come across in our day to day just MIGHT be able to see things differently. Granted, they might offer advice without knowing some crucial information, but on occasion, that, too might be a blessing in disguise as it’s that “crucial information” that keeps our eyes and mind from seeing just what we need.

Now, before you decide to start sharing with everyone in your life just what YOU think THEY need, here are some things to think about when you’re thinking about needs:

  • Diversion vs. Distraction: It’s one thing to tell someone that some ice cream would brighten up their day, but that’s different than telling them they need to fire their store manager. Be sensitive with advice and make sure you’re not overstepping your bounds.
  • Ask: It’s empowering when people ask YOU if they can offer advice. That gives you the opportunity to say no. Don’t forget to give others the same opportunity.

Your action task today is simple: spend ten minutes asking yourself if you really know what you need. It’s probably not material. Maybe it’s a distraction. Maybe it’s taking a step with your business you never imagined. Grab a pen and paper and make a little list. Put it on your fridge and drink it in every time you go to grab a drink – and share what you think other people need with compassion.
