We all have dreams. Aspirations. Lofty goals. Many of us know what our passions are in life and we want to pursue a life that incorporates them to the fullest extent. So many people encourage you to “Follow your bliss” and you will be assured happiness. But is that really the case each and every time?

I like to think that if we listen to our heart and follow our instincts, we’ll get where we are supposed to be.

I know that sounds cryptic and you’re right, it is a bit, but every person’s journey is different and to lay out a clear path to success or happiness just wouldn’t work. There are a few tips I can give you to make sure that following your bliss leads you down the right path.

Practice introspection regularly. When you follow your heart, don’t forget to check in with it regularly. All too often we lose ourselves in the details of actually following our dreams, that we forget to check in with what got it started in the first place.

Understand that speed bumps happen. Don’t get deterred when you run into challenges. They only make the final outcome that much more rewarding.

Have the insight to recognize change. Sometimes our passions and dreams change during our pursuit of happiness. Don’t ignore it. If you keep following your initial passion and ignore the new one, you aren’t truly following your dreams.

Have the courage to change your course. It takes guts to admit that something you’ve worked so hard for isn’t a passion anymore, but it’s important that you find the bravery to change.

While every person has a unique path, I firmly believe that truly following your bliss will never lead to dissatisfaction. Sure, it might be a long, hard road, but in the end, the reward is your happiness.
