It happens from time to time: we get in a rut. Wake up, shower, get dressed, get the kids off to school, commute, sit at your desk for 9-10 hours, commute, make dinner, go to bed, repeat. Sometimes it may almost seem like it is easy to switch to auto pilot, but when you do, trust me, it shows in your work. Clients or other executive may notice that your work just isn’t as inspired as it once was. When this happens, you need to rekindle a romance. A romance with your work.

Passion for your work is just as important as passion in a relationship. It keeps things new and exciting and keeps you wanting more. People can see your passion and they respond to it positively, whether they’re employees or clients. So you can see how important it is to keep that flame burning for your company. Here are a few tips to keep the passion alive at your job.

Pick an exciting side project.

Of course, I understand that there are some necessary parts of business that are just plain boring, but they have to be done. When you can’t get around the boring aspects of your job, start a side project that you’re passionate about. This could mean organizing the company picnic or partnering with a charity. It could also mean preparing a pitch for a huge client. Pick something that gets your blood flowing and will add new zest to your work life.

Connect with your coworkers.

Many people spend more time with their coworkers than they do with their immediate family, so why not take the time to get to know them? Have an employee lunch or happy hour and discover all of the amazing people you work with. Whether they are your employees or peers, when you know more about the people you work with, you’re more likely to be passionate about working for or with them.

Add flair to a normally mundane task.

As I stated before, sometimes you just can’t get around those boring tasks, so why not make them a little more interesting. If you’re working on financial reports for the past month, why not do a little extra research to break down exactly where all of the money went and go deeper into the research. If you’re writing a PowerPoint presentation, spend a little extra time looking for the perfect images to use on the slides. Also, music can liven up just about any dull project! Next time you’re stuck doing paperwork, turn up the tunes and don’t be afraid to do a little chair dancing in your office.
