Stop Asking For Permission: Learning the Cornerstones of Female Empowerment
September 15, 2010
Dear Working Woman,
Do you ever find yourself making a statement and then tacking on the phrase, “…is that okay with you?” Or “…do you have a problem with that?” Or the ever popular, “…sound allright to you?”
Stop for a moment and think back to your last interchange with your boss, your husband or a colleague where you had to do something. How did it go? Did you tack on a phrase at the end like one of those above? Did you end with your voice at a higher pitch (the way you would if you asked a question)? What was it you said exactly?
Chances are better than 90% that you were asking for permission, in some form. Permission-
asking comes in hundreds of disguises and most of the time you’re not even aware you’re doing it. I can’t begin to tell you how many hundreds of executive women I catch doing this every year, who are stunned when they realize what they’re doing.
I can tell you that you ask for permission (more likely than not) whenever you feel vulnerable and uncertain, or want to please, placate or to “get along.” And each time you do it, you hold yourself back and needlessly erode your influence and power.
It’s insidious. It’s a lifelong habit and mind-set that you must break from—if you want to move forward in your career and in your life.
Avoiding the permission trap is a very learnable skill. It starts with understanding the permission trap and recognizing whenever you’re doing it. And in my ebook, Stop Asking for Permission, you’ll also learn how to break the cycle with 6 simple things you can do.
The net result? You gain a newfound sense of confidence, you stop second-guessing yourself and people treat you with greater respect.
