(Fort Wayne IN) April 13, 2011 – Although women have come a long way in corporate America, they still often find themselves dealing with workplace bullies and corporate backstabbing. Influence expert Karen Keller, Ph.D, advises some business tips that women can turn the table on the office manipulator and achieve professional success.

According to Keller, “The workplace backstabber has got to be one of the most frustrating people we have to put up with! Spreaders of malicious gossip and power-hungry manipulators spin wicked webs of emotional destruction.”

She adds, “They’re a formidable force, but one that can be overcome if you stay calm and cool.”

Here are Dr. Keller’s business tips to overcome the corporate backstabber:

  1. Wear emotional garlic! According to Keller, “These emotional vampires seem to be able to smell your weaknesses, enabling them to easily target you. But you can fend them off by working on your weaknesses so you have more inner resolve. You must not take what they say personally. Stay confident and don’t let on that they’re rattling your chain.”
  2. Don’t shoot until you see the whites of their eyes. According to Keller, “Confronting a pesky backstabber can be daunting, so be fully prepared when the time comes. Make direct eye contact and watch that your body language and facial expressions are in alignment with a composed, yet strong stance. You don’t have to be angry or forceful, merely pleasant and positive.”
  3. Just the facts, ma’am. According to Keller, “If someone is spreading lies about you, get all the information you can so you’re readily able to dispute what they say. If they’re gathering others against you, get some people on your side. There is safely in numbers, but be sure those you bring in as allies are objective participants.”
  4. Get out while the getting’s good. According to Keller, “If you’ve steered clear of your backstabber, confronted them appropriately, and even involved human resources and their onslaught doesn’t quit, it may be time to move on to better opportunities. When one door closes, another opens. Weigh your options. Pursue new ventures when time allows. Ask yourself if you really want to stay with a company that turns a blind eye to such a destructive employee?”

Keller concludes, “Deciding to leave is a big decision. Before you go that route, as the final decision, consider taking some assertiveness training or investing in some personal coaching to better prepare you for future interactions. Taking one of these actions ahead of time could save both your job and your sanity.”
