Effective Leadership Means Being the Maverick, http://www.karen-keller.com
Do you stand out as a leader?

The term maverick is a word that I’m sure most of us have heard far too many times to count.  I want to talk to you more about why it is important as a leader to be a bit of a maverick because of the characteristics that this personality type has.

Willful Independence: Probably the most noticeable trait that the maverick leadership style has is that the leader is extremely independent. They may not like to be roped in by guidelines or outlines and thus, may tend to think outside of the box quite a bit. Someone who works for a maverick should be prepared for just about anything to come their way on a daily basis. So if you are a maverick leader, than it’s important to surround yourself with employees who handle diversity and challenge with grace.

Risk Taker: Sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith and trust your gut. In the corporate world, there can be a distinct lack of risk taking since there is the appearance of so much more at stake. When you are a risk taker, your leadership skills will inspire your colleagues to take new risks and try new things (which, by the way, are the only way to get innovation).

Desire to Make Your Mark: If you’re a maverick, you’re probably not too keen on leaving this world quietly. You’re going to bust your behind to make sure that you have left your mark on this world, no matter how you do it. With this desire and your willingness to take risks, like minded employees will gravitate to you in order to be a part of something big, bold and new.

Easily Bored: I don’t know a successful leader who is ever “just bored.” They are always on the go, meeting new people, trying new things, creating new programs. They cannot simply “do what they’re told” resulting in them trying out new ideas and picking up additional projects. A good leader is always looking to be stimulated by something new and brave.

I try to think of a maverick as the cowboy (or girl) of the boardroom. Sure, their techniques may be loud, different and seem a bit odd, but in the end, they’ll have everyone in there corralled right where they want them.
