Stepping into leadership influence comes down to one thing – empowering.
To stand out as an influential leader you must empower others

Want to influence others to follow your lead?

Of course, who doesn’t!

Leadership doesn’t just matter in the boardroom. It matters for more customers, more readers, more referrals, more competitive edge, and more recognition.

Leadership is LARGE, but Leadership Influence is even LARGER. Everyone is a leader – including you.

Stepping into leadership influence comes down to one thing – empowering. Empowering everyone who you want to give, listen, refer, and follow you.

When asked about how to become the best leader possible, Jack Welch, former CEO of GE, replied, “Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.”

Mr. Welch knew what he was talking about.

The way to become a better leader is to increase your ability to empower those around you.

Let’s review some pre-game or pre-empowering rituals to get you started.

First, define empowering. Does it mean constantly holding up cue cards? Or throwing people to the wolves? Neither. Empowering is a process that encourages people to take control over their own lives. That includes;

  • Responsibilities at work
  • Follow through on commitments
  • Power in relationships
  • Ownership for decisions

Second, know your empowering compass. Get centered and confident on your reasons for empowering, the risks you’re ready to take, habits you may need to eliminate, and what skills or talents you have that will make you a successful empowerer.

Bonus tip: think about your overall goal. What is it that needs to be accomplished? Who are you here to serve through empowerment? Whatever you are doing, ask yourself this, “On behalf of whom am I doing this?”

Third, plant seeds. Remove the mindset that it’s ‘all about me.’ Empowering is about the other person. Begin by making suggestions then stepping back and observing. Take notes to understand where the other person is and how they respond to new power.

More than 70 percent of today’s organizations have adopted some form of empowerment initiative. You don’t need to wait for your company to start an initiative, rather, strike out and begin the process in all areas of your life.

Go ahead, supercharge your empowering skills. Then is when you will join the ranks of “Best Influential Leaders.”
