Make Your Words Count

by Karen Keller, Ph.D. on October 25, 2011

It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.

Make every word count when communicating.

Have you ever been at a meeting and felt like you were just talking to yourself? Was there little to no reaction in the faces of the people involved in the meeting? I’m sure we’ve all been in a situation similar to this, and it can be daunting. The thing is, what we were talking about at the meeting probably wasn’t as unexciting as it seemed, we were just approaching it from the wrong angle and using the wrong words to communicate the message. So how can you use the right words to send a clear message and get people to do what you want?
Use power words. What exactly are power words, you ask? Well, these are words that conjure a dominant impression in our minds. These words include enhanced, developed, revitalized and much more. When you start incorporating these words into your daily language, you may begin to see people responding differently to your requests and communication.
Write it down before you say it. Of course, you can’t write down everything before you say it, but for important meetings and presentations, it always helps to write down your thoughts before you get up in front of a crowd. When you write your presentation down, you consciously select the right words and the clearest form of communicating them.
Don’t talk just to be heard. When you are constantly talking, whether it’s relevant or not, people are more likely to tune you out, even in important situations. I’m not saying you should remain mute and stoic at every meeting, but think before you speak and make sure that your contributions actually take the discussion or conversation somewhere.
